D i y compost bin
Diy compost bin
I decided to give composting a go and set to making myself a bin.
I used four posts to which I screwed, some wood (in the shed from a previous unfinished project) around all four sides.
I was going to tack a wire mesh inside but found it to be too expensive, I purchased this plastic mesh and tacked it inside with u pins.
I had to get inside the bin and sit cross legged as bending over was too uncomfortable and spent a bit of time tacking the u pins to hold the mesh in place. This will help with air flow and prevent everything from spilling out.
For my efforts I was rewarded with a nice big blood blister on my thumb,
I missed the u pin, Ouch.
The lid is not attached, I just lift it off and I have not yet added the front panel at the bottom to remove the compost, I need to think about this.
COMPOST
The ground was firmed and then I then placed broken twigs I had collected whilst walking Digby in the woods, this helps with airflow from underneath.
grass cuttings, shredded newspaper, veg peelings, tea bags, egg shells, cardboard, toilet roll holders and a comercial powder aid to composting.
I try to use the green, being veg peelings, grass etc as one layer then brown, newspapers cardboard etc, in layers.
I believe I need to give a good stir regularly. I will not add any cooked food or animal waste.
I am just waiting to say ''hey presto compost''. (Please)
