Update Espalier kiwi

I have had to re assess my thinking on the espalier shape due to not having enough wall space to continue growing horizontally on each tier

I placed a cane and have started to train the bottom tier vertically and the second tier vertically inside the lower tier.

The arm that broke, has been re trained in, on the left hand side upper tier but I noticed this morning the tip of this may have got wind damage. Next year I will have to try and sort that out. That top left hand branch is causing me a few problems.

Another problem I will have is trying to re pot this into a larger pot! I clearly did not think this through.

When I last posted about this kiwi, I was not sure if these were actual tiny kiwis starting.

Looking closer now, I think that these could be flowers and not fruit? I will post updates.

Update on espalier kiwi.

I am trying to train this to a basic shape espalier with a main stem and then arms coming each side at regular spacings in between.

Unfortunately with the wind I lost the arm to the left hand side of the second layer. You may see this in the first and second photo. I am hoping the broken arm will bud and I can then tie it in as it grows.

It looks like the kiwis have started.

The photos show my kiwi with a trellis, I rigged up in the flower pot, using bamboo canes.

I intend to cut the height, all the new green growth level with the horizontal bamboo. Hopefully next spring I will get shoots just below that cut which I will then train to go either side along the horizontal cane which I will tie in.

The main centre stem, that was cut, I am hoping will start a new leader that I can train up to the next horizontal cane which is not added yet but will be. I am thinking about 15'' between the two horizontal canes and then the process is repeated.

The reason I have the kiwi still in the pot, is because A) we could be moving and b) not sure where to site in the garden if we stay. This is new to me and I am posting in the hope that I have understood correctly from the information I have read. The horizontal bamboo was positioned at the height when i placed the pot to the ground and imagined where I would like the first part of the espalier to start.

This very well may not be the correct way. It is my understanding of what I have read please do your own research if wanting to try this.

On saying that I will post picture updates as and when I can for those interested.

In the photo it appears that I have two horizontal bamboo supports, this is not so, it is actually the house the only horizontal support is just below the green leaves on the main stem.

Container Kiwi Actinidia arguta issai

Espalier kiwi

Kiwi is called Actinidia arguta issai

I know I will be looking for information about this, on the internet at some stage.
It is a mini kiwi fruit which is self fertile & hardy. Smooth skinned - eat like a grape or plum!
I am going to try (note try this is all new to me) to train this flat to the wall in espalier fashion and I will let you know how I get on.
This is size and pot I purchased in so will re-pot shortly.
